SUMMARY: The Abbott Museum is home to the Dexter Historical Society. It holds an impressive local history collection with seven themed exhibit rooms filled with stories and artifacts. Visitors will enjoy learning about Dexter’s history and examining all of the items in the collection.
MORE INFORMATION: History: The Dexter Historical Society was established in 1966 after a proposal to the town by a local teacher who was looking to preserve Dexter's history. The building where the Historical Society resides was built in 1836. It was sold to Amos Abbott & Co Woolen Mill in 1856. In 2004, it became the Abbott Museum and home to the Dexter Historical Society.
Collections and Highlights: The collection includes many genealogical documents and town documentation. Each of the seven exhibit rooms in the museum has a special theme. The Tilson Room has products that were made in Dexter on display. The collection in this room dates back over 150 years. Items like a butter churn, Dexter Bottling Company items, Dexter Shoe Company displays and furniture are showcased. The Barber Shop room is set up like a vintage barber shop and has an old-fashioned barber chair, phone, barber tools, and more. The Lysander Cutler Room holds all veterans' items from the American Revolution through all major wars up to the present day. Items include uniforms, guns, other weapons, flags, and medals. The Call-Reed Room holds a collection of Albert Lincoln Call photographs.
