History: The Abbe Museum opened to the public in 1928 and is named for the founder, Dr. Robert Abbe. Abbe held a collection of Native American artifacts and worked with other benefactors to establish the museum. The museum was the first Maine institution to conduct archaeological research. The collection outgrew its original space at Sieur de Monts Spring and then outgrew its second location at the YMCA building in Bar Harbor. In 2001, the museum opened its downtown Bar Harbor location. The museum became the first Smithsonian Affiliate in 2013.
Collections and Highlights: The Abbe Museum houses over 70,000 items of historical Native American significance. The collection's highlights include canoes, contemporary art, archaeological dig findings, photographs, and more. Popular pieces in the collection include an ash basket with porcupine curls, birchbark furniture, and an elk skin wedding dress. At the downtown location, the core collection, called People of the First Light, portrays more than 12,000 years of Wabanaki heritage and perspectives. The displays include photographs, artwork, textiles, artifacts, sculptures, and videos. At Acadia National Park, the museum showcases archeological finds like ancient tools and pottery. This location also has The Basket Tree, which details the history of basket making by the Wabanaki.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: At the downtown location, the museum hosts regular exhibits like the Mi’kmaq Porcupine Quillwork. Each year, the museum hosts the Waponahki Student Art Show, which features artwork by local children. The museum collaborates with the local community to hold community events. Tours: Guided group tours are available from July through October. Reservations are required.
