History: The Curran Family owned the farm from 1914 to 1991 when the last surviving member, Catherine died and made provision for the farm to be preserved in its original form. Seven buildings and 31 acres form the core of the 19th Century Curran Village. Since that time the village has expanded to include buildings that have been relocated to the village or been constructed onsite. Today there are 29 buildings located on the farm, and they specialize in preserving the farm culture of Maine from 1850-1920.
Collections and Highlights: The collections are extensive and include historic tractors, a 1917 Ford Model T Depot Hack, costume items including a woman's mourning dress, lady's lace-up boots, examples of patent medicine and homeopathic treatments, a braided rug collection, a penny-farthing 1917 bicycle, an Eddy icebox, historic pieces of furniture, extensive farm equipment, an 1894Â carousel, built by the Armitage-Herschell Co, and much more.
Exhibitions, Events & Programs: A wide selection of workshops are offered for both adults and teens. Past workshops have included blacksmithing, letterpress printing, timber framing, metal/sand casting, teen woodworking, and domestic skills. Domestic skills include felting, pickling, woodstove cooking, penny rugging, and foot treadle machine sewing. Check the upcoming workshop calendar for details.
Some potential events include Winter Holiday in the Village, Thanksgiving Carousel Rides, Earth Day, Maple Syrup and Irish Celebration, and summer S.T.E.A.M. Camp.
Tours: Tours are self-guided unless offered as an event.
Season/Hours of Operation: The season and days of operation are not set in stone. You need to check the website to verify if the Village will be open when you want to tour. In general, except for special workshops the 19th Century Curran Village is closed from late December to the beginning of March. Different events have different hours. Check the events calendar.
Admission Fees: Unless specified the usual entrance is $10. Workshop fees vary from $100 to $975.
Rental: The farm may be rented for $12 per person, lunch is an additional fee with a minimum of 15 people for special events like birthdays, and other gatherings. The visit can be tailored to your group.
