Where to Go

Aroostook County is a remote wilderness in northern Maine, making it an excellent place for adventurous visitors and their pets. Aroostook State Park near Presque Isle features over 600 acres of forests and wildlife. Leashed dogs are permitted on park trails. In the winter, please do not allow your dog to walk in cross-country ski tracks, as your furry friend may disturb the trail. The Deboullie Public Land Area is another remote area that allows unleashed dogs to hike, camp, and canoe with you.

If you are looking for a canoeing adventure with your pooch, consider travelling the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a 92-mile stretch of lakes, streams, and ponds. Your dog may also enjoy accompanying you on a fishing trip to the Fish River Chain of Lakes, a premier location for brook trout, landlocked salmon, muskellunge, lake trout, brown trout, and perch.

Although Aroostook County is remote and lacks many amenities of urban areas, there are several veterinarians and pet supply stores. Presque Isle and Caribou have animal hospitals with veterinarians on call 24 hours per day.

Where to Stay

Many vacation home rentals permit pets at the owners’ discretion. Consider renting a home near Presque Isle or Caribou or staying in one of the area' inns or hotels to be near a variety of recreational activities.

Where to Eat

Remote Aroostook County does not have as many fine dining opportunities as other regions of Maine. Many local pubs and cafes have outdoor seating areas that may permit dogs. Check with the restaurant owners before bringing your pooch.
